We often call rock style – for good reason, the style of rebel women. Rock bands and heavy punk/ grunge music in the 1990s and the desire to manifest their views through clothing were, of course, responsible for its prevalence. For a long time, we associated this style inextricably with the entire rock subculture and all the stereotypes associated with it. Currently, fashion draws from all available sources, and rock style is definitely one of the inspirations of street and runway fashion. It can be said that the mainstream has “absorbed” the rock style, and now each of us can draw from it as much as we like, without having to radically adapt to its fundamentals.

History of rock style
However, the first references to the style date back to the 1960s/70s. In the 1970s, a cultural and social movement known as Punk, or “children of trash,” emerged in Germany. It was intended to promote anarchy, rebel against rules, prevailing hierarchies and promote human independence. The movement was distinguished by the fact that it was not concerned about its appearance, and it propagated leather rampons, studs, safety pins, glans, jeans pants and the so-called “new” look. “stripes,” colorful iroquois and piercings. In the UK at the same time the Sex Pistols, who are considered the originator of the punk movement and the development of alternative music, began their career. Then in the 1990s, the band Nirvana, headed by Kurt Cobain as an icon of the style, was responsible for the greatest spread of the grunge ‘style.
Looseness and nonchalance
Rock style is all about looseness, nonchalance and a certain sloppiness, as well as opposites in the way different styling elements are combined with each other – a tulle skirt and heavy boots. We can associate it with a stage style, a little more exaggerated, just promoted by rock bands, or with a daytime style, which is mainly about comfort and distance from each other.
Elements of a rock closet
What closet items should we associate with this style and what should we bet on if we want to be inspired by it?
First of all, the rock style is leather clothing items, such as jackets like rampons, leather or eco-leather pants, belts with larger buckles or studs, leather bracelets on the hands. Then there are the heavy boots, which have been so fashionable for several seasons now and nothing promises to make this trend go away anytime soon, this is by far the strongest mainstream reference to rock fashion in recent years. Black total looks and the color black in general is the guiding theme of this style, and it is often combined with the color red, for example, red and black check or stripes is also a combination taken from the rock style.
I recommend you pay special attention to the checkered pattern, because it is an increasingly prominent pattern in street fashion and may be, one of the main trends of this year. In addition, t-shirts or sweatshirts with the names of rock bands. Rock style clothes are often styled in worn, unfinished, washed-out styles. I mean here, jeans with holes, ragged or unfinished fraying legs, frayed blouses, blouses. Oversized, “stretched” sweaters and vests are also items to bet on. Sneakers in the style of converses, those reaching beyond the ankle especially, will fit perfectly into this style.
You can easily relate to the rock style with the expressive accessories alone, hairstyle or makeup are integral parts of this aesthetic. You can bet on strong jewelry – chains, bracelets, rings. Style your hair in an Iroquois or colored hair, and in your makeup go for a strong red lip or if you are bolder black or dark brown. Don’t forget to emphasize the eye more strongly ;). Smoke eye, or a thicker black eyeliner line in the style of Amy Winehoue, very welcome.

Bella Hadid an inspiration
Should we be inspired by Bella Hadid’s style? This is, I think, a rhetorical question 😉
She was the one who was announced as the best dressed person in 2022 and won the poll
“Power Dresser of the Year 2000” by the Lyst portal. Instead of following existing trends, the model is the person who has been creating and setting these trends in street fashion for several years now.
As for the styling itself, all I can say is masterpiece. Bella opted for an oversized leather ramoneski, a long cardigan coming out from underneath, topped with frayed bell-bottoms and heavy black boots – quintessential rock fashion. It looks like it was vividly “pulled” from the 90s and concerts of top rock bands. On top of that, it is worth noting that the model focuses on vintage and her styles are very often modern references to the 1990s and 2000s, and she has become a forerunner of the return to fashion of those periods. Therefore, it is definitely worth getting acquainted with Bella’s styling if you want to know what will be trending in fashion and want to be “up to date”.
Hadid relies on very bold and distinctive combinations in her styling. She is definitely not afraid to stand out from the crowd in a good way, and the above black total look is the best proof of that. Recurring trends for the 2000s include. Wearing dresses or very long tunics in combination with pants. Just like the model did above. The extra-long frayed holes and black color are a very strong reference to rock styling.
And the square-toe shoes, which I wrote about in the article on vintage style, are another strong trend this season, harkening back to fashions from earlier decades. It is also worth noting how much Bella pays attention to consistency in her styling, and every even the smallest detail (hairstyle, jewelry, make-up, accessories) is well thought out, the only way we can get a “wow” effect if we are consistent in building our personal style.
Anja Rubik – world style
When it comes to people who represent us in the fashion world with dignity and whose style is worthy of attention, Anja Rubik could not be missing from this list. The model is a lover of the black color and we can often see her in a black total look. She is faithful to minimalist sets and colors, but rather opts for interesting, more modern cuts. The styling from the photo is the so-called. “degenerate”, but does not each of us feel best in such simple , comfortable combinations? An oversized leather shirt, nonchalantly imposed over a basic t-shirt, topped with tube tops and embellished boots. It is a very simple casul look, with a hint of claw kept in rock style.
We can often see Anja in the designs of the fashion house YLS and on the runway of this designer. This model’s styling is no different. All preserved in very modern cuts and trends, yet this leather long coat is a beautiful reference to the style of rock fashion. It’s worth noting the see-through top, or so-called “top”. “sheer trends”, which continues to be used by designers, while adding sensuality and claw to the styling. On top of that, sandals combined with tights is also quite a daring solution, but it shows who is not afraid to experiment with fashion 😉
It is also worth noting that Anja is very faithful to her minimalist image, not only in styling, but beautifully promotes the fashion for natural, light makeup and hairstyles. Which is the basis of her personal style – huge applause for her consistency and for her consistency in this area.
