What are compliments in business?Accepting compliments is an art, and not an easy one at that. When someone tells you that you look nice, you often lower your gaze to the ground. But what to do when a co-worker or boss bestows them on you? There are compliments useful in business that you need to know.

You think that compliments are the attribute of vaselineers who want to achieve their goal by this means. They are too subtle and insincere for you to start using them yourself.

On the contrary, the compliment should be sincere, based on facts, only then it is valuable. Admittedly, you can say to your co-worker: “This is great, keep going,” but that’s too general.  Don’t risk offending the recipient by using empty words. Don’t use compliments just for fun. The real ones are uttered less often than useless, trite praise.

You think that almost giving compliments makes people rest on their laurels and not improve themselves to be the best version of themselves. Besides, some people have brought from home a traditional upbringing that was free of compliments, and then reproduce this model at work. Their education and intelligence tells them what to do without waiting for flattery.

On the contrary, skimping on compliments will effectively limit good relations with co-workers. Why should they do better, try harder, when they get nothing in return? If you only take a deficit approach, focusing on what is missing, what still needs to be done, and what has failed, you will effectively alienate your colleagues. The grateful approach is to highlight your team’s talents and celebrate successes – then more successes will follow.

You think you shouldn’t praise your colleagues. After that, they may consider themselves better than you. And especially, never to reciprocate a compliment….

On the contrary! Do not hesitate to praise your colleagues and the quality of their work. With compliments, every employee gets a boost and engages more effectively in the performance of assigned duties.
Studies have confirmed that groups that work in a positive environment are more effective. If people in your company are promoted, complimented then they expand their horizons, are more creative. In the long term, the group’s business is strengthened. Notice the contributions of others – it will improve your relationships, trust… and productivity!

You think that a man who works badly does not deserve any compliments.

On the contrary: the turtle became one by pigeonholing the team. It is not the best, however, it is worth something. What if you bring out its potential? Instead of being a hypocrite and giving him compliments he doesn’t deserve, focus on the positive qualities of his personality. Give it the boost it needs to succeed someday. To give it confidence, emphasize its marginal qualities above all.

You think your boss’s main job is to delegate tasks and motivate others. Not the other way around.

On the contrary! It’s unbelievable, but true: your boss is a human being, like others. Worse, he needs more recognition than you do. In moments of doubt, he remains alone, and his place in the hierarchy is constantly making enormous demands on him. No one pities him, but no one praises him either, fearing suspicious glances from co-workers. Note that recognition should circulate in both directions, there is no hierarchy here. If you say to your boss: “I appreciate your work and how you are managing the project,” you will certainly arouse positive feelings in him. The employee, whether he wants it or not, manages his own time and work, but also the the ego of his boss.
