Many of them confirm that even the correction of minor beauty flaws has a positive effect on self-confidence and well-being. Modern aesthetic medicine focuses on non-invasive or minimally invasive methods to achieve natural results and a youthful appearance without the use of a scalpel.

What is aesthetic medicine? History and development in Poland

Aesthetic medicine originated from plastic surgery, which initially focused on reconstructing damaged tissues and restoring body function after injury. In the twentieth century, more attention began to be paid to the aesthetic aspect of procedures, which resulted in the development of a branch focused on improving appearance –the first plastic surgeries and facelifts were performed. With the development of technology, aesthetic medicine began to offer patients less invasive ways to improve their beauty, which quickly gained popularity.

The origins of aesthetic medicine in Poland date back to the 1990s, when the first specialized clinics offering aesthetic treatments began to appear. The term “aesthetic-repair medicine” was not introduced into Polish law until 2023, in a special decree of the Minister of Health. In the same year, the Supreme Medical Council proposed a definition of this branch of medicine:

“Aesthetic medicine is health care services, involving interference with human tissues, provided by physicians and dentists to restore or improve the physical and mental well-being and social functioning of the patient by changing his or her appearance.”

It is worth noting that aesthetic medicine procedures can only be performed by doctors or dentists with current licenses and appropriate qualifications. Intervention in the skin – the largest organ and the most important element of the immune system, requires professional medical knowledge and experience, since even the smallest mistake can affect the entire body and its reactions. Therefore, doctors are responsible not only for the effects of the procedure and possible complications, but also for the long-term effects of the therapy.

What distinguishes aesthetic medicine from plastic surgery is its focus on minimally invasive non-surgical surgical methods that provide maximum benefit with low risk of complications. Thanks to advances in knowledge and technology, patients can visibly correct beauty deficiencies while maintaining a natural appearance without artificiality. Also key in aesthetic medicine is a holistic approach that takes into account not only the physical aspects, but also the psychological benefits, affecting the patient’s overall quality of life and well-being.

What does aesthetic medicine do?

Aesthetic medicine focuses on correcting the appearance and delaying the visible signs of aging, thereby improving patients’ well-being and quality of life. This includes all modeling and filling procedures, reducing wrinkles and firming, improving the appearance and condition of the skin and promoting skin regeneration, correction of scars or treatment of hyperhidrosis and alopecia. These procedures can be divided into two groups:

  1. Procedures without violating the continuity of skin and tissue, which include all interventions that do not require cuts or punctures. They are usually less risky and have a shorter recovery time. Examples of such treatments include laser therapy, ultrasound or radiation therapy.
  2. Procedures with a violation of tissue continuity, which require a physical breach of the skin and usually a longer healing time. These include fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, Botox, mesotherapy, lifting thread treatments, autologous fat grafting or microdermabrasion.

In each of these groups, it is required that the treatments be carried out by authorized specialists, who will carefully assess the patient’s needs and select the appropriate method to ensure the highest safety and effectiveness of the therapy. Patients must be qualified for the treatment, after examination and exclusion of any contraindications.

Advantages and potential disadvantages of aesthetic medicine for women

The growing popularity of aesthetic medicine treatments is not unfounded – just look at the benefits cited by women. What comes up most often?

  • Improved well-being, increased self-esteem and self-confidence,
  • Reduce signs of skin aging, improve firmness, elasticity and hydration,
  • Improving the quality and condition of the skin,
  • Minimally invasive and short recovery time,
  • minimal risk of scarring,
  • personalized therapy plans.

Aesthetic medicine, despite its many benefits, also involves some risks. It is important to keep in mind that even minor procedures are associated with the possibility of complications – either during the procedure, shortly afterwards or even many years later. Therefore, it is crucial to choose proven clinics, keep accurate medical records, go through the qualification process and perform tests to catch possible contraindications to the procedure.

The opportunity to quickly fix beauty flaws comes with the risk of falling into a trap – overuse of treatments or the desire to improve all, even insignificant defects in appearance. It is worth remembering that too many substances injected under the skin can be counterproductive, such as overloading the skin and aging it earlier.

Insufficient knowledge of the possibilities of aesthetic medicine can cause disappointment with the results of the procedures. Particular caution is recommended for young people and those suffering from dysmorphophobia, a distorted perception of their appearance.

Another no less important issue is cost. Aesthetic medicine procedures are not cheap, and maintaining their results usually requires repeating the procedure several times a year, which adds up to a considerable sum of money.

Aesthetic medicine treatments – for whom?

The opportunities offered by aesthetic medicine can actually be used by anyone, although there’s no denying that most often women come to the surgeries and clinics. Ladies are looking for a way to stop the aging process, model the figure, improve facial proportions or get rid of imperfections. Usually, in addition to the obvious physical effects, behind this there is a desire to improve one’s well-being and raise self-esteem, disturbed by not fitting into certain beauty canons or one’s own expectations.
