Classic style in fashion, we often associate with dull, slightly bloated and only elegant sets. Is this really the case? Or does it provide a great base for building your style? Let’s de-emphasize the stereotypes associated with the classic closet. See how you can use, in an original as well as practical way, the classics in your daily styling. The truth is that each of us has such items in our closet. Often we are not aware of it, how much potential there is in them. A trench coat, moccasins, a white t-shirt and straight-leg jeans – you’ve just effortlessly built the perfect classic look.
What does it consist of?
The characteristics of classic fashion are simple and timeless forms, which are definitely worth investing in. We often associate this style with elegant pieces such as – little black, boxy jacket, white shirt, pencil skirt, moccasins, stilettos, trench, or cigarette pants. On the other hand, it is true that we can dress classically, and not necessarily elegantly, or how? A white t-shirt, blue straight-leg jeans, a romance jacket, white sneakers or sneakers, all finished off with a shopper – these are all fashion classics as well. We can use them to create styling for a more casual, daytime look.
The classic style, associated not detached with minimalism and neutral colors, is currently very much back in favor due to the saturation of the fashion world and the Internet with fast trends. We often feel overstimulated and lost in the multitude of clothes available in stores. We are looking for simpler and less complicated solutions that at the same time allow us, to feel feminine.
Where can we look for classical inspiration? Parisian or Scandinavian style is a good source from which we can draw. These are styles where quality is definitely more important than quantity. We can also go back to the style of the 1990s, where a large part of the classics we know were “pulled” from the business style of the time.
History takes a turn
The origins of classic style date back to the 1950s, it was then, after World War II, that more attention was paid to the quality, durability and practicality of clothes. It was also then that they spread their fashion, well-known to us today fashion designers such as Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Coco Chanel. We associate classic style especially with the latter, or Chanel. It was she who spread the principle of “the less the better” and introduced the little black into the salons. Probably each of you has also heard of the tweed boxy jacket, or the classic Chanel 2.55 handbag. Each of these items is still going strong today and is the inspiration for many items we can buy in chain stores.
Then, after the era of Hippie and Disco times, the classic style returned to favor in the 1990s. It was then that the most desirable model of jeans became Levi’s 501 with a high waist. And women, as a sign of their strength and professional development, introduced the “corporate” look – suits, pencil skirts, a white shirt.
The classic style, like any in fashion, has undergone a subtle update over the years. We used to wear more form-fitting jackets, waist-length shirts, pants with tapered legs – cigarette pants. The classical style was associated as “rigid.” Now we are betting on more relaxed forms. If a jacket is oversize, if a shirt is a straight cut, if pants are straight or flared leg.
Editorial recommends: Brigitte Bardot an icon for all time.
Victoria Beckham and her classics
Victoria is a definite queen of classic style. No one can create maximum effect with minimal form as well as she does. In the classical style, details play a very important role. Appropriate cuts, lengths and color awareness. To ensure that the styling is not boring, you need to bet on the modern character of your clothes and accessories. The above styling is “just” classic black pants and a white shirt, so why does it look so good?
Victoria knows what’s in the grass, which is why she opted for extra-long flared legs that cover her shoes. Which made her legs appear even longer as well as slimmer. The smooth white shirt, with a slightly shiny material, looks elegant and “expensive”, which enhances the wow effect of the whole styling. Minimalism in the selection of gold accessories, perfectly fits the convention of the whole look. Remember that styling is also about makeup and hair. If you’re going for classics and simplicity, go for soft make-up and natural hairstyles, too. Then the whole styling will be consistent, and the effect like Victoria’s will be bricked.
Every lover of classic style, should have a suit in her closet. It is also Victoria’s great love. He wears them in every form, the more classic one with a straight leg and a waisted jacket, and the more fashionable oversized or wide-legged one. Each of us will find something for herself among so many possibilities. Here we see an example of a more elegant suit with a thicker fabric structure. To “break” the heaviness of the suit, she accessorized it with a silk shirt, which adds lightness to the overall look. Note the shirt cuffs pulled out from under the jacket. This is a great styling trick that you can use in your daytime outfits, it will add a fashion spice to your outfits.
Kate Moss’ classic look
A classic look, does not always have to be formal, remember. Kate’s styling showed how to perfectly balance proportions and combine less and more formal closet items. Black ramones, every one of us knows, but how to style it so that it is not like everyone else? Kate’s combination of a shawl-finished shirt and flared black pants adds more spunk to the jacket. I don’t recommend you to style it with a tube top and a t-shirt, then it will be boring and “like everyone else”. Throw on some sturdier platform shoes, like Kate’s, and you have a modern, classic look.
The classic style is mainly a weathered and subdued color scheme. Monochromatic styling, is a great solution when you want to look stylish. The combination of gray and silver in this case, perfectly highlights the beauty of the model. One additional undone button on the shirt, gives the styling a casual and fashionable flavor. Kate replaced the classic tapered cigarette pants with a straight – looser leg, and finished the whole thing off with subtle bow shoes, which helped give her a light and more feminine look.
However, it is not only Hollywood celebrities or fashion designers who have such a good sense of classic style. The streets of the cities are full of inspirational and phenomenally dressed women. The beauty of fashion is in the details, and each woman adapts the style to her character. By taking inspiration from others, you can create a classic but unique look for each day. So if you are a gentlewoman who is still searching for your style let yourself have a little fun with your clothes! Look for the perfect cut of shirt and your favorite color of jacket! And, above all, carefully look forward to the next articles of the fashion series, perhaps the casual style will appeal to you even more strongly?
