According to GentleWoman’s editors, Brad Pitt earns the title of the most stylish man of 2022. Specially for us, Fashion Courier takes a look at an inspiring fashion chapter started this year by a Hollywood actor.

Stylish man

Men’s style is constantly evolving, and in 2022 we followed a lot of bold, fashion-forward moves by established actors on the red carpet. But still, a certain recognizable Oscar winner raised the bar even higher. It has long been common knowledge that Brad Pitt is one of the most stylish men in the world. Interestingly, even such an established personality does not rest on his laurels and continues to experiment with his image.

Looking through the actor’s photos from the 1990s, one can be inspired by casual styles with leather jackets, knit vests and cargo pants in the lead role. With his burgeoning career and relationship with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt increasingly opted for timeless classics: velvet tuxedos and boxy tailcoats, never too fitted, became his favorite allies. In 2020, the actor became the face of Italian tailoring brand Brioni, and in 2021 he designed a capsule collection for the brand, “BP Signature,” filled with his favorite “must-haves” – including cashmere polo sweaters and sports jackets. But no one expected Pitt’s next fashion chapter.

Skirt and dot

This year, we had the opportunity to observe Pitt’s new fashion incarnation, exuding casualness and redefining the concept of masculinity. The press tour of the action film “Bullet Train” (directed by David Leitch) proved to be the perfect opportunity to introduce the actor’s groundbreaking style to the world. In the summer in Berlin, Brad Pitt surprised the public with a linen combo of a powder-pink shirt, a loose brown jacket and an airy brown skirt. For his already iconic look, Pitt matched his combat calf leather boots, showing glimpses of enigmatic calf tattoos. Asked by Varietyohis intriguing appearance, Brad Pitt replied with a laugh: “we’re all going to die anyway, so let’s make a mess of it.”

The media was in an uproar. While many were delighted with Pitt’s styling, some in the press didn’t like such an uptick in the (long overdue) ideal of the male look. But men wearing dresses or skirts is hardly a new phenomenon. From the ancient Greek himation to the Japanese hakama, almost every culture in history has had its own variation on this item of clothing. Representatives of the LGBTQ+ community have been breaking the heteronormative skirt gaze for years, from Billy egp Porter to Marc Jacobs. Meanwhile, the younger generation of artists, from Harry Styles to Asap Rocky, wear skirts every day without much thought.

This isn’t even the first time Brad Pitt has worn stereotypically “feminine” clothing. In 1999, on the cover of Rolling Stone photographed by Mark Seliger, on the occasion of the promotion of the film “Fight Club” (directed by David Fincher), the actor wore a sparkly mini dress. It remains to this day one of the most interesting (and provocative) portraits of the actor.

After the publication of photos from the Berlin premiere, there were even those who referred to Pitt’s skirt as a kilt, to at least somehow masculinize it. But the actor’s current stylist, Haans Nicholas Mott, has publicly corrected that it is a skirt. And period.

The Mott Effect

Who is Haans Nicholas Mott? And what made this absolutely niche designer, hitherto unknown to even the most knowledgeable fashion editors, chosen by Pitt to be his personal stylist? Mott started his fashion brand, held in the spirit of slow fashion, in early 2010, and co-founded Anecho with Anastasia Khodkina in 2015. His creative process is uncompromising and intimate, and during the design process he is concerned with achieving the effect of “clothes you can live in.” It uses only certified, environmentally friendly materials and dyes.

In Pitt’s case, the designer worked directly with him. Both of them appreciate in their cooperation the openness to new ideas as well as the closeness of their aesthetic tastes. Importantly, it was Brad Pitt who suggested a linen skirt in “espresso” color to match the Mott-designed linen jacket. The hot weather that welcomed the actor to Berlin made his choice all the more valid. Lightness and comfort: that’s the impression given by this styling.

In subsequent destinations of the press tour, the actor showed off other looks created with the designer. In Paris, Brad Pitt wore a loose-fitting suit in a shade of sunburnt orange, contrasted with a burgundy t-shirt with a heart-shaped cutout. In Los Angeles, green reigned supreme, nonchalantly broken up with yellow Adidas sneakers(the “Gazelle” model; the brand saw a jump in sales, probably due to Pitt). At several other events, Mott offered the actor colorful variations on the linen suit theme, characteristically loose (but never slouchy), with contrast stitching and colorful buttons (all hand-formed in the designer’s studio).

Fashion time

Brad Pitt and fashion are pulling together, which is best seen especially in 2022. The Hollywood star is known for supporting smaller, artisanal brands that offer the highest quality materials and unfussy design. She buys sweaters at The Elder Statesmen, a Los Angeles-based brand known for its hippie style (and dizzying prices); shoes at British shoemaker Paul Harnden; timeless hats of refined fedora at Nick Fouquet. In September, Vogue announced that Brad Pitt is also making his contribution to the world of very (and I mean very) luxury niche brands.

The actor is the co-founder of God’s True Cashmere, a brand specializing, as the name suggests, in cashmere. Together with her friend Sat Hari, who is a jewelry designer and holistic healer by day, they are creating a lifestyle company with no division by season or gender. The entire range of products is made in Italy, with yarn sourced from various ethical goat farms. Most of the clothes, from sweaters to over-size plaid shirts, are in the price range of two thousand dollars and up. Stationally, the brand can be purchased at Selfridge’s in London and at the chic Just One Eye boutique in Los Angeles.

Stylish man

What do we love Brad Pitt’s style for in 2022? For authenticity, unforcedness and a fresh approach to men’s dress code – especially that of “formal” events. The actor shows that you don’t have to lock yourself into the conventions of a long-established masculine image. His new style proves that men don’t have to choose embarrassing cuts or wear only gloomy black or muted navy blue. The most important thing is to just feel… good.
